Also, according to a note in connection with Convoy SC 12, it looks like Clam, sailing in that convoy, had been scheduled for HX 87. Also, the Norwegian Inger Lise, and the trawler Gemma, sailing in Convoy SC 13, are said to have come from HX 87. |
Notes: Commodore C. D. Burke was in Corner Brook, Vice Commodore Captain M. Roberts in Narragansett. The convoy had 31 ships, 17 sailing from Halifax, 14 from Sydney, C. B - 24 remained at rendezvous with local escort. * Rockpool fell astern during a gale on the night of Nov. 21, Nemea, Brant County and Helle during the night of the 23rd. There's something strange here, the ships denoted * are also listed in Convoy HX 89. Looking at the dates, they could not have been in both convoys from Halifax to U.K. Since there are more than 31 ships listed in the table above, my only guess is that some of these ships started out in HX 89, then joined the HX 87 on their final leg of the voyage(?). Subtracting these 4 ships, as well as the 2 ships that joined late from HX 88 as noted below, we end up with the number 31. (This does not explain Redgate, however). Helle and Michalis had originally belonged to Convoy (S)HX 88, but got parted from Sydney section in fog, and joined up with HX 87 at 10:00 on Nov. 17. Ocean Escort: HMS Alaunia (until 10:45 Nov. 25, 55 06N 21 50W). More details on all the Norwegian ships named in this table can be found in the alphabetical ship lists of this website. Will be added: HX 88 |
