Also in the Bermuda portion, but did not join HX portion ("to be sent to Halifax to await orders"): Ferncastle and Mosli (both Norw - it looks like Mosli joined, but returned to Halifax), G. S. Walden (see HX 83), San Demetrio (see HX 84), and San Ernesto. The following were scheduled, but did not sail: Comedian, Languedoc (both said to have joined HX 77), Shirvan and Standella (both listed in HX 78). Mosli, Queen Adelaide and Shirvan had been cancelled from HX 75. Lida and Pilar de Larrinaga had been cancelled from Convoy SC 6 and Hollinside, sailing in that convoy, is said to have come from HX 76. |
Notes: Commodore, Vice Admiral Raymond Fitzmaurice was in Baltrover. Vice Commodore was in Milcrest. The Master of Clydebank was detailed as Commodore to Methil The Master of Parthenia was detailed as Commodore to Clyde. The Master of Harpathian was detailed as Commodore to Barry. The convoy had 37 ships on departure. * British General joined the convoy on Oct. 10. ** Prinses Maria Pia came under MOWT charter, Oct. 10-1940 (in other words, on arrival UK in this convoy). Also, Gyda is listed as British in several convoys on this site, and I'm wondering if she too came under British control (there was also a Norwegian ship by this name, but she had already been sunk by the time this convoy sailed). * These ships fell out of convoy on Oct. 8/9. Confield was torpedoed by U-58 on Oct. 8, shelled and sunk by HMS Weston Oct. 9. These ships were not the only ones who had trouble - the convoy encountered a gale, causing the Norwegian Dagfred to experience problems, follow link for details (more details on all the Norwegian ships named in this table can be found in the alphabetical ship lists of this website). Ocean Escort: HMS Ausania, from Halifax until 23:00 on Oct. 6. Will be added: HX 77 |
