* The ship in station 83 is spelt Brazil on the original A 1 form (there was an American ship by this name), but the departure date for HX 38 fits with information found in the Norwegian Brasil's voyage record.

* Texas Banker had been scheduled for the previous convoy, HX 37 (became British Empire Tern).

Also, according to notes in the Advance Sailing Telegram for HX 39, the Greek Kalliopi S, Nestos and Konistra, the British Arthur F. Corwin, Trehata and Inverlee and the American Ethan Allen, sailing in HX 39 (except Konistra, which was cancelled again), had originally been scheduled for HX 38.

Notes:
Commodore was in Manchester Brigade, Vice Commodore in Queen City.

* Europa was a Danish ship, taken over by MoWT in 1940.
Bourgogne was the former Høegh Ray (Norwegian), sold to France in Sept.-1938 and renamed. Survived the war, scrapped in 1959.

According to Arnold Hague, the following ships became stragglers (see his listing for HX 38 on the page naming ships in all HX convoys):
Akaroa, Ancylus, Athelviking, British Grenadier, Mytilus, Quebec City, San Gaspar, Stigstad, Valparaiso, Vestold and White Crest (all on May 1).
Anglo Africa, Anglo Saxon, Delhi, Llanwern and San Angelo, (all on May 3).
Bourgogne, Brasil, Hanseat, Ile de Re, Merchant Royal, Scottish Maiden and Simonburn (all on Apr. 28).

Ocean Escort: HMS Ascania.

A. Hague names the following escorts (extracted from this list of HX convoy escorts received from D. Kindell; dates are European style, day/month/year):
Ascania - From 26/04/40 to 08/05/40
Saguenay - Frpm 26/04/40 to 27/04/40
Skeena - From 26/04/40 to 27/04/40
Walpole - From 01/05/40 to 12/05/40
Wessex - From 01/05/40 to 12/05/40
