Built in Fevig, Norway in 1917. Previous names: Sonja until 1921, Boloma until 1925, and Ørja until 1928.
According to this external page, she was delivered as Sonja from Sørlandets Skipsbyggeri, Fevik, Grimstad in Apr.- 1917 to A/B Transmarin (Bernhard Ingelsson), Helsingfors, Finland. From Jan.-1922, Rederi A/B Tertia (I. Lignell), Gothenburg, no name change. From Febr.-1922, sailed as Bolama for Aug. Bolten Wm. Miller's Narchfolger, Hamburg. Owned from Oct.-1925 by D/S A/S Ørsnæs (Jens Lund & Co. A/S), Tvedestrand, Norway, renamed Ørja. From Dec.-1925, owned by Skibs A/S Ørsnæs (Trygve Hyenæs), Tønsberg, same name. From 1927, Trygve Hyenæs, Tønsberg, then from Aug.-1928, A/S D/S Ardent (Johs. Krøger),Tønsberg, renamed Ardent.
On charter to Ministry of War Transport until 1946.

According to Page 1 of the archive documents, Ardent was on her way from Shanghai to Hongkong when war broke out in Norway on Apr. 9-1940.
It'll be noticed, when going to the various archive documents, that she occasionally had long stays in port.
Renamed Hai Chen in 1946 (China).
This external page states she was owned by Tung Nan S.S. Co., Shanghai when she had that name. Sailed as Ming Hsing for Wah Shang Steamship Co. Ltd., Shanghai from 1946. Owned by Chung Hsing S.S. Co. Ltd., Shanghai from 1947, no name change. In 1949, Wallem & Co. Ltd., Panama took over, renamed Ost Bay. Owned from 1950 by Walter S.S. Co. (Wallem & Co.), Panama, renamed Walter. Sailed under the same name for Cia. Istmena de Transp. Maritimos S.A. (Wheelock, Marden & Co.), Panama from 1953, then taken over that same year by People's Republic of China, Peking, renamed Tsao Chung. Removed from Lloyd's register in 1954, further fate unknown.
