This ship carried petrol and aircraft. Her voyages took place mostly in the Pacific and the Indian Ocean, usually sailing alone, except when she made voyages from the Persian Gulf or an Indian port, and had to join a convoy for part of the voyage, before proceeding independently if her destination was Australia. Convoy information for some of her voyages can be found in A. Hague's Voyage Record above.
According to Page 1 of the archive documents, she was on her way from Palembang to Auckland when war broke out in Norway on Apr. 9-1940. She stopped at Thursday Island on Apr. 15, later arriving Auckland, via Brisbane, Sydney and Lyttleton, on May 14 (see also my narrative for Thordis). Her 1941 voyages also start on this document and continue on Page 2, which also shows most of her 1942 voyages. It'll be noticed, that she had a long stay in Los Angeles that spring. Page 3 has the rest of her 1942 voyages, as well as her 1943 movements (showig occsional long stays in port that year) and some 1944 voyages, while the rest are listed on Page 4, which shows another long stay in Los Angeles at the end of that year. This document also has most of her 1945 voyages (as can be seen, she was in Sydney for almost a month that fall); see also Page 5.
She was never attacked as far as I've been able to ascertain, though she was pursued by what was believed to be a U-boat on May 8-1945. According to her Voyage Record above she was en route from Calcutta to Abadan on that date, arriving Abadan on May 17. I imagine there was quite a lot of celebration going on for those who were allowed to go ashore that night, this being Norway's Constitution Day (and Norway having been freed on May 8).
Renamed Bergeland, March 7-1947. Sold in Dec.-1951 to Rederi A/S Norse King (Odd Godager, later Odd Godager & Co.), Oslo, and renamed Norse Mountain. Sold to Japanese breakers and arrived Shimotsu on Feb. 23-1962 to be broken up by Nichimen & Co. Ltd., Itozaki, Mihara City, commenced March 12-1962.
The text on this page was compiled with the help of: "Nortraships flåte", J. R. Hegland, E-mail from R. W. Jordan, Sig. Bergesen fleet list, and misc.
