CONVOY ONS 3
According to Arnold Hague's "The Allied Convoy System" the ONS series commenced on March 15-1943 with ONS 1, and continued till March 28-1944 (ONS 32) at which time it was suspended because of the withdrawal of Escort Groups due to the upcoming invasion of Normandy. It started up again with ONS 33 on Sept. 29-1944 and continued until May 21-1945, when the last convoy in the series, ONS 51 sailed. The convoys departed from Liverpool, with feeder convoys from Milford Haven, Belfast, the Clyde, Oban and Loch Ewe, routed to Halifax N.S., but divided off Halifax, with some vessels going to Canada, while a small detachment of ships southbound from Halifax joined. The convoy would then assume the title XB (Halifax-Boston), proceeding to Cape Cod Bay where it terminated. Some vessels entered Boston, but the main body of the convoy continued to New York via the Cape Cod Canal and the East River. |

Departed Liverpool on Apr. 5-1943 and arrived Halifax on the 28th (Arnold Hague says 18 ships). |

Notes: I have not been able to check the spelling and nationality for all of the above ships. With regard to the escorts, I have no sources against which to check them. Morska Wola was the ex Norwegian Rio Negro. Northern Pride started out in this convoy but due to defects proceeded to Belfast for repairs on Apr. 10. All other vessels proceeded to New York Escort Group 40: Local Escorts: Final Local Escorts: Ashantian was sunk by U-415 on Apr. 21 with the loss of 16 men. 50 survivors rescued by Northern Gift. ("The World's Merchant Fleets" says 44 survived, agreeing with the casualty number of 16). Wanstead was also torpedoed by U-415 on Apr. 21. According to these records she remained afloat and was later sunk by escorts (1 died, 34 survivors rescued by Northern Gift, 12 by Poppy), while Jürgen Rohwer's "Axis Submarine Successes" states she was damaged by U-415 and sunk later that day by U-413. ("The World's Merchant Fleets" gives ON 178 as the convoy, and says 1 died, 48 survived). To the next ONS convoy in my list ONS 4 |
