CONVOY MKS 10

Convoy MKS 10 Cruising Order - Algiers to Gibraltar
Departed Bone on March 23-1943 and arrived Liverpool on Apr. 5 (Arnold Hague gives 33 ships).

Transcribed from A 1 form received from Robert Martin, England - His source: Public Records Office, Kew.

For info, there was also a faster convoy, MKF 10A, which had left Algiers on March 6, arrived Clyde on the 14th. Also, an MKF 10B, leaving Algiers on March 10, arriving Clyde on the 17th.

See also Convoy KMS 10.

Further details have been added with the help of:
"The Allied Convoy System", Arnold Hague
"Axis Submarine Successes of World War Two", Jürgen Rohwer
"The World's Merchant Fleets", R. W. Jordan
"Loyd's War Losses", Vol. I.

What follows shows the formation as of March 25-1943 - cruising order Algiers to Gibraltar.

The first 2 columns are empty, possibly intended for ships joining from Gibraltar(?).

Comparing the above with a list of ships in Convoy MKS 10 received from Don Kindell, based on A. Hague's own research (convoy from Bougie, March 24-1943), I find that A. Hague does not mention the following:
San Cirilo, Liberian and Samaria, and the 2 MMS's. (San Cirlo is said to have proceeded to the U.K. with the next convoy).

On the other hand, A. Hague has added the following ships, which are not included on the A 1 form (station numbers are not given):
Norwegian Audun
British Clan Murray
British Director (Gibraltar to Newport)
British Duke of Athens
British Empire Bairn (Bone to Algiers)
British Empire Gazelle (Gibraltar to Clyde)
American Esso Bayway (Oran to Gibraltar)
British Havildar
British Hindustan
British Ocean Athlete (Gibraltar to U.K. - to Holland as Govert Flinck)
British Rudby
Norwegian Topdalsfjord
British Trader
Dutch Triton

Notes:
Commodore was in Macharda, Vice Commodore in Delane.

City of Perth, on a voyage from Bona for Mersey in ballast, was torpedoed and damaged on March 26-1943 by U-431. Taken in tow and beached near Cape Fegalo - total loss. She had a crew of 80 and 3 gunners - 2 gunners were killed.

Escorts (also received from Don Kindell, whose own work, which covers "Royal & other Navies Day-by-Day in World War 2" can be viewed at this website):
March 23-March 25:
Wheatland.
March 23-March 27: Atherstone, Brocklesby, Felixstowe, Man o'War, Quantock.
March 27-Apr. 5: Chambly, Commandant Drogou, Dornoch, Drumheller, Ilfracombe, Lagan, Lord Hotham, Sherwood, Shippigan.
March 28-Apr. 5: Morden, Tarana.
March 29-Apr. 5: Algoma.
Apr. 5: Bern, Leeds United.
