CONVOY KMS 17

Convoy KMS 17 Cruising Order - June 18-1943
Departed Liverpool as Convoy OS 50 / KMS 17 on June 16-1943, split up on June 27.
The Gibraltar portion (KMS 17) arrived there on June 29. The OS portion continued to Freetown, w/arrival on July 8-1943.
(Arnold Hague gives a total of 57 ships in the combined convoy, 34 in the Gibraltar portion).
A 1 form was received from Robert Martin, England - His source: Public Records Office, Kew.
Robert's information has been compared to and supplemented with details received from Don Kindell; his source: Arnold Hague's research. (Don's work, which covers "Royal & other Navies Day-by-Day in World War 2" can be viewed at this website).

This is the KMS portion only. The combined Convoy OS 50/KMS 17 is available at this external site, and as will be seen the "red" portion has some ships that are not mentioned here, while some ships listed here in the Gibraltar portion appear in the blue portion at the site.

Some of these ships continued from Gibraltar to other ports - please see the second table below.

* The ship in station 42 is listed as Lysaker - this should probably be Lysaker V. (Norway also had a Lysaker IV).

* My document lists the ship in station 35 as Merkland, but it's given as Markland at the external website mentioned above. Britain had ships by both names; Markland was 4454 gt, while Merkland was smaller at 1363 gt.

A. Hague's list agrees on the whole with the above, but he has not included Dornoch and Merkland in the Gibraltar portion (he suggests Convoy KMS 19 for Dornoch). He has also listed the following (not mentioned on the A 1 form):
Coity Castle, Stanhope and HMS Abercrombie.

Commodore (R. P. Brooks?) was in Helencrest (Algiers), Vice Commodore was the captain of Dalcross (Algiers), Rear Commodore the captain on Pentridge Hill (Bone).

Escort (from June 27 to June 29):
HMS Aberdeen.

What follows was transcribed from a document received from Don Kindell; his source: Arnold Hague's research. According to this document the convoy (still designated KMS 17) left Gibraltar on June 30-1943. (Automatically assuming that A. Hague's research is correct, I have not checked the spelling and nationalities of these ships, like I usually do).
