CONVOY HX 307

Convoy HX 307 Cruising Order
Departed New York on Sept. 6-1944 and arrived Liverpool on the 20th (Arnold Hague gives 73 ships).
This information is from Arthur Moore's book "A Careless Word - A Needless Sinking" - added here with Captain Moore's written permission. (Ordering information can be found on this page on the U.S. Merchant Marine website).

Captain Moore says the convoy had 55 ships on departure New York, 17 others joined from Halifax on Sept. 9. Note, however, that there are only 15 ships included for the Halifax section in the Advance Sailing Telegram below + the Rescue Vessel Bury=16.
3 more joined from Sydney, N. S. on the 10th.

The 3 ships joining from Sydney are not included on this A 1 form. They are named at the end of the Advance Sailing Telegram.

Br=British, Am=American, Du=Dutch, Norw=Norwegian, Pa=Panamanian, Ice=Icelandic.

H = Halifax portion.

* Roy Martin, England has told me:
"Empire MacKendrik, Merchant Aircraft Carrier with four Swordfish in addition to grain cargo – the blanks astern of this vessel allowed her to drop back to fly off aircraft".

* Fort Townshend is not listed in the Advance Sailing Telegram.
Also, John T. Holt does not appear in the AST, instead Joseph Holt is listed (both were Liberty Ships).
