Also scheduled: Daldorch and Europe - both are listed in HXF 18 Additionally, there's a note in connection with Convoy HXF 19 saying that Cairnesk and Kohistan in that convoy were from HX 18 * According to A. Hague, the British Conus (FFO, station 14) and White Crest (cargo of timber, station 85) also sailed in this convoy. He says Conus and several other ships became stragglers on Febr. 3; they have been denoted * above. Langleeford and White Crest also straggled, but no date is given. See Hague's listing for HX 18 on the page naming ships in all HX convoys. |
Notes: The British Gretafield became a straggler and was torpedoed by U 57 on Febr. 14 in 58 27N 02 33 W with the loss of 11 men, 30 survived according to Roger W. Jordan. He adds she was on fire and drifted ashore at Dunbeath near Wick, 58 14 15N 03 25 45W. Broke in 2 on March 19 and became a total loss. Jürgen Rohwer lists her as sunk by this U-boat. R. W. Jordan also states that the British Langleeford was torpedoed and sunk by U 26 on Febr. 14 in 51 40N 12 40W with the loss of 4 men, 30 survived. Rohwer gives the position as 70 nm northwest of Fastnet. No convoy is mentioned by either source. The Norwegian William Blumer later came under German control and is listed in the Homefleet section of this website. Only a few of the ships in this convoy made it through the war. A. Hague names the following escorts (extracted from this list of HX convoy escorts received from D. Kindell; dates are European style, day/month/year): Related external links: |
