CONVOY HG 21

Convoy HG 21 Cruising Order
Departed Gibraltar at 15:20 on March 4-1940 and arrived Liverpool on the 13th (Arnold Hague says 36 ships).
Info received from Tony Cooper (his source: Public Records Office, Kew).

Crossed out ships did not join.

**Elswick Park joined the convoy during the night of March 4, and Katowice joined in the afternoon of the 5th, both having left Gibraltar late.

Notes:
Commodore was Vice Admiral R. C. Davenport in Olivebank, Vice Commodore was Captain W. A. Kelly R.N.R. in Salween, Captain Wilson.

London portion had 15 ships, Liverpool portion 19, for a total of 34.

The Vice Commodore states that at about 23:00 on March 5, when in 35 42N 09 53W, 2 ships crossed the front of the convoy from starboard to port, switching on bow and steaming lights. "Bow lights were shown by Convoy and ships on Port side had to alter their course to starboard. Whistle sounds were heard in one and two columns and afterwards the British Fame and Macgregor reported having been in collision".

British Yeoman, British Fusilier, Desmoulea and Elswick Park parted company for Bristol Channel ports at 04:00 on March 12 in 51 42N 06 14W.

Macgregor, Whitford Point, British Petrol, Port Nicholson parted company for Clyde, and British Integrity for Belfast at 21:10 on March 12 in 53 34N 04 34W.

Escorts:
Local from Gibraltar: HMS Active - left at 11:30 on March 6 in 36 20N 11 32W.
Ocean (from Gibraltar to rendezvous): HMS Velox, Vidette.
With Liverpool portion: HMS Vimy and Winchelsea joined at 08:30 on March 10, 47 15N 10 59W - to Liverpool. The convoy was 15.5 hours early at rendezvous, having experienced very favourable weather.

Air Escort was present while the convoy was forming up at Gibraltar on March 4 until dark.
Also during the day on March 10 from 10:45, 47 27N 10 46W.
