 Notes:

As will be seen when going to Page 1 of the archive documents, Havmøy arrived Trinidad on Apr. 11-1940, 2 days after the German invasion of Norway. There's a note on the document saying she was in U.S. Atlantic-West Indies trade in this period. Her 1941 voyages also start on this document, while the rest* are shown on Page 2, which also lists a Jan.-1942 voyage from Botwood to Alexandria, VA. Her remaining 1942 voyages can be found on Page 3, and it'll be noticed that she spent quite a long time at Hampton Roads at the beginning of that year, from arriving there from Alexandria, VA on Jan. 19-1942 to departing for St. John's, N.F. on March 19. The reason for this long stay is not known.

*Havmøy appears to have lost a crew member in the spring of 1941. Stavern Memorial for Seamen (link at the bottom of this page) claims that she sank on Apr. 14-1941 when on a voyage from Philadelpia to Brasil, and that Able Seaman Sverre Johan Sandvik died in this incident. If he did die on that date, there must have been another reason for his demise, because Havmøy did not sink. "Våre falne" gives the same information as the memorial. Going back to Page 2 above, we learn that Havmøy did indeed leave Phildelphia on Apr. 1-1941, stopped at St. Thomas Apr. 8, continuing that same day to Joao Pessao (Brazil), with arrival Apr. 25 - perhaps the Able Seaman had met with an accident, or had become ill, on this voyage?

Havmøy did not make any Trans-Atlantic voyages at all during the war, though she's mentioned in a diary naming the ships leaving Halifax to form Convoy SC 80 for the U.K. on Apr. 17-1942. Going back to Page 3 of the archive documents, we see that she was in Halifax at the time, but headed for St. John's, N.F. the next day and according to Arnold Hague, this voyage was made with Convoy LC 7 - ref. link provided in the table above. She's also mentioned in a diary listing ships in Convoy HX 198 from Halifax on July 12 that same year, but again, please note that she did not leave port that day in order to join the HX convoy to the U.K., but to join Convoy HJ 8 from Halifax to St. John's - see Voyage Record above.

 Some Convoy Voyages:
As can be seen, only a selected few of her convoy voyages are mentioned here - for information on voyages made in between those noted below, please see the documents received from the Norwegian archives and Hague's Voyage Record above.

Havmøy was mostly in service around North America/Canada in 1942, until Sept.-1942, when she made a voyage to Greenland in Convoy SG 7, which left Sydney, C.B. on Sept. 4 - see also Page 3. According to Arnold Hague, she returned with Convoy GS 11, departing Greenland on Oct. 19-1942; the archive document gives her departure Ivigtut as Oct. 11, but she may have made some local voyages before heading back to St. John's? Arrival there is given as Oct. 23. (The Norwegian Brush is also listed in this convoy). She later made another voyage to Greenland, having sailed in Convoy SG 15, which left St. John's on Dec. 12-1942 and arrived Ivigtut (mining town) on the 19th. The Norwegian Aragon, Brush and Gudvor are also included.

Together with Aragon, Bencas, Carmelfjell and Ørnefjell, she headed back to St. John's in Febr.-1943 with Convoy GS 20, departing Greenland on Febr. 22, arriving St. John's on the 28th. More St. John's, Halifax, Sydney, C.B., Quebec etc. voyages now followed, until the summer of 1943 when she's said to have made another voyage to Greenland with Convoy SG 28, which left St. John's on July 15 and arrived Greenland on the 19th, and in which the Norwegian Annik, Aun, Carmelfjell, Gudvor, Iris, Lutz, Nyco and Ørnefjell also took part. Some of these ships, including Havmøy, returned the following month with Convoy GS 27, departing Kungnait Bay on Aug. 24, arriving St. John's on the 29th. See Page 4, as well as Hague's Voyage Record for more information on her voyages that year. As will be seen, she made another voyage to Greenland and back in Oct./Nov.-1943.

In Jan.-1944, she travelled to Kingston, Jamaica, starting this voyage in New York on Jan. 12 with Convoy NG 410, which arrived Guantanamo on Jan. 18, continuing that same day with Convoy GAT 112, which arrived Trinidad on the 24th, but as already mentioned, Havmøy's destination was Kingston, where she arrived Jan. 19, according to the archive document (A. Hague gives her arrival as Jan. 24). Follow the links provided to these convoys for more details; it looks like Havmøy was the only Norwegian ship in NG 410, while Sevilla is also listed in GAT 112. Having made a voyage to Puerto Plata, Havmøy returned to New York the following month in Convoy GN 112, departing Guantanamo on Febr. 3, arriving New York on the 10th, continuing to St. John, N.B. that same day, with arrival Febr. 12 - this stop at New York is not mentioned on the archive documents (Page 4 and Page 5).

The majority of her other voyages that year kept her around the U.S., St. John's, Halifax, Sydney, C.B. etc. In Sept.-1944, she made a voyage to Trinidad, starting out in New York on Aug. 29 with Convoy NG 456, which arrived Guantanamo on Sept. 4, continuing that same day in Convoy GAT 158, which arrived Trinidad on Sept. 9. The Norwegian Alar, Britamsea, Norvarg, Notos, Nyco, Ørnefjell and Vav are also said to have sailed in NG 456, while Notos (bound for Aruba) and Vav are the only other Norwegian ships listed in GAT 158. Havmøy continued to Demerara the next day, later to Barbados, then returned to the U.S. Her subsequent voyages are shown on Page 5 and Page 6, while convoy information for some of them can be found in the table above.

In the spring of 1945, she made some independent voyages to Vera Cruz and Havana (March/Apr.-1945) and on VE Day, she was in St. John's, having arrived there on May 8 from Sydney, C.B. The rest of her 1945 voyages are listed on Page 6 and Page 7; the latter document also also has some 1946 voyages.

For more information on all the other Norwegian ships named here, please see the alphabet index at the end of this page, or go to the Master Ship Index.

Stavern Memorial commemoration - Stavern Memorial for Seamen claims that Havmøy sank on Apr. 14-1941 when on a voyage from Philadelpia to Brasil, but this is incorrect. Able Seaman Sverre Johan Sandvik is commemorated; said to have died in this incident, but if did die on that date, there must have been another reason for his demise. "Våre falne" gives the same information as the memorial. According to Page 2, Havmøy had left Phildelphia on Apr. 1-1941, stopped at St. Thomas Apr. 8, continuing that same day to Joao Pessao (Brazil), with arrival Apr. 25 - perhaps the Able Seaman had met with an accident, or had become ill, on this voyage?

Back to Havmøy on the "Ships starting with H" page.

Other ships by this name: P. Meyer had lost a ship named Havmøy in a heavy storm on Apr. 9 (19?)-1935, 20-30 miles off the south coast of Jamaica, when on a voyage Black River, Jamaica for Havre with a cargo of logwood. 11 men were lost with the ship. Captain Albert Knutsen, the 2nd engineer and 5 others were able to save themselves on a raft, but the 2 officers died of exposure, while the remaining 5 were picked up 2 days later. This ship had been built in 1934 and was 1546 gt. Another Havmøy, ex Frank was built in Porsgrunn, 1919, 942 gt, later renamed Rimac. In June-1953 a 4998 gt Havmøy was delivered to A/S Havtor (P. Meyer). Sold in 1967 and renamed Aud Presthus for Johs. Presthus, Bergen. Sold to Singapore in 1973, renamed Hoe Seng. Sold to owners in Piræus in 1975, renamed Zea Silver, then Panos in 1980, Kotinos in 1981, Panamanian Intra Sky 1981 - broken up same year. The name Havmøy was again used for a ship delivered in 1968, 42 501 gt. Renamed Brali for Torvald Klaveness, Oslo in 1975, Asean Liberty for L. G. Johannessen, Oslo in 1978. Sold to owners in the Philippines in 1983, broken up in 1985.
