The following numbers are based on the questioning of 114 people in the period Nov. 12-Nov. 24-1941:

A total of 82 people (incl. 1 female) had managed to escape to England. 60 had come directly across the North Sea, 19 around the world from Sweden*, 3 by aircraft from Sweden. 47 of them were domiciled in the western part of Norway, 33 from the east, 1 from the south and 1 from the north. Average age was 22, 5 were younger than 8, 2 older than 40. Out of those who came from the eastern part of Norway, 11 came directly across the North Sea. About half were fishermen, 15 were students and the rest of misc. professions. 20 were in danger of being arrested, 1 had been in jail for 4 months.

* Those who had travelled "around the world" had spent 5-7 months on the voyage (often through Russia and other countries).

When questioning those who had escaped, it became clear that the food situation in Norway had gotten worse in the course of that fall, especially since the Germans had requisitioned a great deal of the potato crops. Those with low income were undernourished. The families of seamen in allied service in the Bergen area got 30 kr per month, supplemented by assistance from neighbours and friends, but it was the understanding at the time that this assistance would soon be forbidden.

Out of the 114 questioned, 5 were women, 3 children, 4 seamen who had paid off in England, 2 from Svalbard, 6 had travelled around the world, 4 had arrived by plane from Sweden, 5 had arrived from the south of Norway, 85 had escaped from the western part.

9 were domiciled in east Norway, 5 in the south, 1 in the north, 99 in the western part.

21 were fishermen, 19 were students, 19 worked in an office, or bank etc., 11 were factory workers, 9 farmers, 9 seamen 3 mechanics, 4 military personnel, 2 miners, 2 policemen, 1 painter, 1 driver, 1 baker, 1 ferry master, 1 road engineer, 1 film photographer, 1 surveyor, 1 chimney sweeper, 2 housewives, 1 nurse, 1 worked in a café, 3 children.
