VERDE was a Regia Marina water tanker, 1,454 or 1,490t displacement, commissioned 16.10.1923. She sailed from Palermo bound for Trapani at 08:50 on 26 March 1941 together with the other Regia Marina motor water-tanker TICINO (1,470 grt/1924, 2.588 t displ., ex German HANS LEONHARDT of Leonhardt & Blumberg/Hamburg, ex VULCAN, purchased 7.2.1935), managed by SA Coop. Garibaldi. At 16:22 TICINO sank on a mine laid by HMS RORQUAL when North of Trapani at 38°06'N 12°31'E. VERDE rescued her crew then resumed her course, but at 17:25 she also detonated a mine laid by the same sub and sank in less than one minute (23 dead). Platon is correct, as always.
