An interesting post on the J-aircraft Ships & Navy Board led me to another web-site that states that the US had 17 coast guard cutters built for the Philippines in 1902 / 1903 and that many survived until WW2 in civilian service. According to the site, they were built in Shanghai yards, except 2 at Uraga, and were about 411 tons and were named for Philippine provinces. The site lists the following 13 with the attached data (* = in service just prior to WW2 as civilian):
Balabac, sold 1913 to British North Borneo govt
Busuanga, became Zambalas*
Corregidor
Leyte
Luzon
Marinduque*
Masbate, lost prior to 1913
Mindanao*
Mindoro, became Vittoriana*
Palawan
Romblon, became Isla de Mindoro*
Samar*
Tablas, became Cadiz*
I do have data from another source that lists the following as having been built by Farnham & Boyd in Shanghai and being of composite construction of 341 tons:
Leyte
Mindanao
Mindoro
Panay
Samar
so I have 14 names so far of the 17. the last 3 were probably named from among the following:
Basilan
Bohol
Cebu
Dumaguete
Negros
Visayas
Does anyone have any additional data on these ships? THe 'missing' 3? where built, changes of name, fates, etc?
thanks,
Ralph
