My late father-in-law, T. M.P. "Tom" Downes was on board H.M.S. Vulcan in Brindisi in May 1944 when it came under aerial attack. I do not know what he and/or others did during this attack but he was awarded the M.B.E. for his actions and was presented with it at Buckingham Palace on the 11th of July 1944. Needless to say the subject was never mentioned but now, together with my children, I am very belatedly trying to find out any information about both H.M.S Vulcan and this incident in Brindisi. We should be very grateful for any details, and, if possible, a picture of this vessel during its war-time career. Any and all information is very much welcome.
