Re: Canadian Ferry Purchase 1944 or 1945

David, Many thanks. I am embarrassed to admit that I didn't bother to check Miramar or similar sources. I didn't think a local ferry would have been in them. Now I know better. I've got my Canadian contacts (Jan) checking and they can't find evidence of actual usage in Canada. I know that the sale w...

Re: Canadian Ferry Purchase 1944 or 1945

Many thanks, David. This is plausible. The vessel had been condemned by authorities in the US, pending major repairs that the operator decided were not economically practical. Just a little surprising they would take it all of the way to Canada instead of breaking it up somewhere in the mid-Atlantic...

Canadian Ferry Purchase 1944 or 1945

Perhaps one of my Canadian friends or someone else can help me... In 1944 or 1945 the ferry Gov. Albert C. Ritchie (built in Newburgh, NY in 1883 as Newburgh ) was sold by the state of Maryland. The US removed it from the register by January 1, 1946 with the notation "Canadian." My feeble ...

Arctic Convoys Survivor?

Does anyone know how I can find out if an individual was a crew member aboard an arctic convoy ship iN WWII? Here is all I know... Name is Thomas Joseph Murphy Nationality is American (possible dual Irish citizen) He was later a ship captain so he most likely was an officer at the time. He would hav...

Re: Naval records research in Spain

Thanks, Felix. I've compiled all of the information I've been able to collect -- what we know to be true and what some have claimed to be true -- into a "white paper" on the subject. This is primarily for the purpose of organizing my research that's than for reaching conclusions. I would b...

Re: Naval records research in Spain

Hello Felix, Yes, I am researching the topic but thus far all investigations have yielded no definitive evidence that the tug Mascot was intercepted and captured / sunk by a Spanish warship off the coast of Cuba in late 1895 or early 1896. I have gone to great lengths to try to find evidence of this...

I find that the Translate app for the iPhone works reasonably well. You just take a photo of the relevant text and it does instant translation. Not perfect but still useful.

Re: Loss of Soviet destroyer Serdity July 1941

Hi Jan-Olof, and Happy New Year. I don't have a clear answer to your question. I can report that the Soviet reports on ship losses indicate this ship was attacked by two dive bombers. Of course that doesn't help you very much. The aircraft dropped a total of eight bombs and a couple hit the ship. My...

Re: Question to forum members

Hi Siri, For several weeks I could not get the forum to recognize my login details, and whenever I tried my virus warning software told me the forum had been hacked and was a security risk. I assume that was in error and I seem to be able to log in these days (using the exact same info that was earl...

Re: Admiral Stark Evacuation convoy from Vladivostok

Sorry to say that I do not have access to my files in storage as a result of mandatory isolation orders where I live in the US. I'll check my computer files to see if there is anything I can add.

I might have this in my files. I built a database of all of the ships/boats that Stark used. Let me check. Back to you shortly.

Re: tallinn convoys 1941

The word I have seen used in Russian texts is конвоя (convoy). The first four of 7 groups of ships (which included all of the warships and large transports) were labeled кон-1 through кон-4. I don't remember what the other three were called but can look it up when I have access to my files.

Re: Naval records research in Spain

Hello Felix, Thanks very much. Your efforts here have been extremely helpful Yes, I plan to visit the US National Archives sometime this year to look through the State Department records. That will be the last source to explore. They did conduct an investigation and concluded that there were no Amer...

Re: Details of attack by KG26 on SS Henry Bacon

Thank you, igorr. The only discrepancy here is the number that attacked. Various accounts indicated that 24-26 aircraft were allocated to the attack and repositioned accordingly. However, Prinz's own statements indicate that not all aircraft participated in the actual raid. The weather was very bad ...
