HMS Urge

The wreck of RN submarine Urge has been located off Malta

https://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/news-and-l ... -off-malta

She evidently struck a mine soon after sailing from Malta and puts an end to the speculation that she was lost off the coast of Libya

Hi David,

I had the privilege to be present. Quite an experience!
I always doubted the Libya claim as those who had access to the old forum posts can attest. By the way, SIri, these postings do not seem to be accessible anymore?

Best regards,

Platon

Many thanks, Thorsten!
The search feature did not seem to work when I tried before.

Best regards,

Platon

I’ll look into it, Platon, but I seem to remember, in the message my son posted, regarding the old forums (see the sticky at the top with the title “where are all the old forums”), that it cannot be searched?

Thank you Thorsten, for taking the time to find them manually.

Siri

No, it works only for the new forum.
I had some time so I searched the old forum manually. 8-)

It is easy to develop a theory for a war incident when the facts cannot be cross-checked easily even from those who have pure and good intentions because so many of us just read and reproduce as sometimes this is just what we want or maybe some facts are nice to believe! Meanwhile an initial investigation may point the way to the truth for those who don't ignore the facts and a determined investigation may reveal the truth! This has always been happening and it is so nice for the real facts to shine at last!

The discovery of a "presumed lost submarine" is probably a great relief for the families of the relevants after all these years!

Well done Mr Platon!

Thank you Georgios.

From the start it was evident to me that the Libya claim was false.

The research was done in the Kew, Washington (for German records) and Rome Archives.

The most relevant records for the search were found at the Ufficio Storico Della Marina Militare in Rome. I would like to take the opportunity to give special thanks to their staff who forgave my broken Italian and went out of their way to satisfy my demands!

Special thanks to Francis Dickinson (grandson of Lt Cdr Tomkinson of HMS Urge), Dr Timmy Gambin, the staff at the University of Malta and all those involved in the search including the students who did quite an exhausting work.

Best regards,

Platon
