I have received a letter from Les Pollard who was a crew member of the Nandi and recalls sailing on her as a Galley Boy (previously on the HT Hada County which went aground off New Brunswick. He recalls returning to UK in January 1942 on the Nandi and that even only 5000tons and not as fast as the Hada County she was still able to handle the pitch and roll of the N Atlantic. A few weeks later they sailed through the Pentland Firth, Scotland, and docked at Grimsby where he disembarked before joining the Nortind and sailing to Florida USA. He recalls an incident when an American Fighter plane opened up with his canon onto the bridge area of the Nortind before realising his mistake! The vessel returned to Britain where he signed off at Manchester, the next trip was rumoured to be to ArchAngel.
