Hello,
I´m a little confused about the US sub Greenling´s attack against Japanese convoy northeast of Manus, Admiralty Islands, on 30 December 1942.
According to Cressman´s The Official Chronology of the US Navy in World War II, submarine Greenling (SS-213) attacked Japanese convoy about 180 miles northeast of Manus, Admiralties, sinking army cargo ship Hiteru Maru and damaging cargo ship Ryufuku Maru.
JANAC credited Greenling the Hiteru Maru and an unknown maru of 4000 tons this day.
From Miramar Ship Index I read, that the Hiteru Maru (5857 tons, b. 1919) was originally called Ryufuku Maru.
Japanese Monograph 116, Part 8: Monthly Losses of Combatant and Non-Combatant Vessels mentions
Nissho Maru A-cargo 5857 tons sunk by submarine 0-34N, 148-58E and Ryufuku Maru (no type, no tons) damaged by submarine in the same position.
Miramar Ship Index doesn´t know any Nissho Maru of 5857 tons. If we assume, that this 5857 – ton ship indeed was Hiteru Maru (ex-Ryufuku Maru), what was the other ship damaged, if any?
From Miramar I found a Nissho Maru of 2606 tons, b. 1919 as Lake Farrar, of which the Miramar mentions: “trace lost after 1941/2”.
Could it be possible, that this Nissho Maru was the other ship damaged/sunk by Greenling´s attack?
Thanks,
Markku
