Hi all,
From L27's patrol report
1505 hours
In position 49 45 N, 01 30 5 W sighted a camouflaged merchant vessel (7000 tons) screened by 7 (also camouflaged) trawlers. Bearing 090º, range 10000 yards, enemy course 270.
The screen of trawlers was stationed on an arc of circle from 45º on each bow at about 3000 yards
1530 hours
Enemy altered course 280º
1534.40 hours
Fired three torpedoes from a position about 500 yards on port quarter of port wing trawler. L 27 altered course to port as it was impossible to clear the track to starbord owing to land and rocks.
1535.30 hours
Submarine became light and was therefore taken to 50 feet.
Heavy explosions at 1537.20, 1537.30 and 1537.35 hours. Hydrophone effect (H.E.) ceased after last explosion. Various lights in the boat were broken by the force of the explosions.
18 depth charges were dropped between 1541 and 1557 hours, some fairly close. A few more distant ones were dropped between 1605 and 1607 hours.
