Italian sources claim that she was sunk by aircraft but I think they are mistaken:
GINO ALLEGRI was attacked by aircraft just after midnight on 31.5.42 and escaped damage. She was torpedoed by PROTEUS at 0541 (Italian reports list the time as 0445 but they were ahead 1 hour) and blew up with a terrific explosion causing some slight damage to the submarine. It is possible that following the earlier air attack they were under the impression that she had been the victim of a second air attack. She had been in company with the EURO which rescued 21 survivors and reached Benghazi. Your questions are always interesting.
