HMS Sunfish / V-1

Post by Jordi Comas » Fri Sep 11, 2020 11:10 am

Hi all,

Soviet submarine V-1 (Ex-British Sunfish) was sunk by mistake by RAF Liberator bomber 27/7/44 in the Norwegian Sea. Do you know time and position of the sinking?

Thank you very much

Hi Jordi,

The aircraft pilot reported sighting the submarine at 0810B. The attack must have occurred in the minutes that followed. The initial position was given as 64°34' N, 01°16' W which was about 82 miles east of V.1's route. This meant that the submarine could have been enemy as bombing restrictions had been arranged for up to 30 miles either side of V.1's route. However, the aircraft had made an error in navigation and later corrected it as 64°52' N, 03°28' W which was about 27 miles east of V.1's route and within the bombing restriction area. Thus technically the RAF pilot should not have attacked the submarine. A needless tragedy.

Best regards,

Platon
