Italian Human Torpedo attack on Alexandria Dec 1941

To mark the 80th Anniversary of this famous attack, the magazine Rivista Marittima is publishing an article of which I am co-author with Commander Rizza of the Italian Navy (former Head of the Italian Naval Archives Section). It is titled "Storia di una Baleniera" (story of a whaling ship) and it examines the role of HMS Thorbryn (ex-Norwegian whaler) in this exploit. We have made great use of the warsailors website and it is gratefully acknowledged in the text.

Uboat.net has also began publishing my Italian submarine histories and readers interested in the subject can check it now. It is not yet completed as sections are to be added in the future.

To all the members of this forum, my best wishes for the New Year.

Hi Darius,

Thank you for your kind words. I may perhaps have another article. I suspect that the Italian submarine Section will keep me busy as updates and corrections are inevitable.

All the best for the New Year,

Platon

Hello Platon,

First I'd like to offer my wishes for a Happy New Year. Very impressive and interesting material you have published on uboat.net, I now have a lot to read :)

btw, is the book about Italian submarines still in the works?

Best regards,

Jan-Olof

Hello Jan-Olof,

Many thanks for your good wishes which I reciprocate. Hopefully the year 2022 will see the end of this pandemic!

I do not think my book on Italian submarines will ever be printed and I have decided that publishing on the web will be more suitable as it allows for corrections and additions for this kind of work. I hope to publish an Overview and a Monthly Chronology on the uboat.net site but this depends if it will be accepted. There are still many gaps, especially in the Commander biographies.

Please feel free to point out errors as these are to be expected!

All the best,

Platon

I am very sorry to learn that the book on Italian submarines will not be seeing the light (too many pages, I suspect). You could very well, however, publish a small contribution on the subject (e.g. a single submarine or a pair) on the next AIDMEN Bollettino for 2022... I must confess I'm an interested party, a very interested one..

Hello Francesco,

Thank you fo your kind comments. My text is addressed principally to English readers as the subject of Italian submarine operations is little known outside Italy. I am not sure I can contribute much to Italian readers but I will consider your offer to publish another article for AIDMEN.

I also take the opportunity to thank you for translating my article on the French Resistance in Tunisia (1940-1941) which was published last month in the AIDMEN Bollettino. I hope it shed some light on a little known aspect of History, the work of French agents who reported the passage of Axis convoys to Libya. British submarines and bombers based in Malta made use of this at a critical time. It also had a role in the destruction of the Tarigo convoy.

All the best,

Platon

P.S. please check the uboat.net site from time to time as new sections will be added. A list of most successful Italian submarine commanders has just been added. A list of most successful submarines will follow soon and hopefully a chronology and an overview including statistics.

Fantastic news Platon!
Outstanding job as usual :)

Do you plan to open a topic where we can submit the very small number of errors or updates?

All the best to you and all Forum members in 2022!!
