HMS Triton

Post by Jordi Comas » Sat Oct 19, 2019 4:41 pm

Hi all,

Is there any explanation for the loss of British submarine Triton in December 1940 in the Strait of Otranto?

It seems that she was lost by a mine but...........

Thank you very much

Hi Jordi,

HMS Triton probably hit a mine. Exactly where is the question as there were several minefields in the area she operated. She apparently torpedoed the Olimpia as is reported in various sources but the escorting destroyer Riboty does not appear to have carried a counter-attack. The torpedo-boat Castelfidardo and MAS 512 sailed from Brindisi shortly after to assist Olimpia but without making any A/S attack. Other MAS boats of the 23rd Flotilla based at Otranto carried a sweep but, to my knowledge at least, failed to report anything. In late afternoon the torpedo-boats Altair and Andromeda were sailed from Brindisi to carry out an A/S sweep but made no claims. The report that she was possibly a victim of the torpedo-boat Clio on 18th December as listed in http://www.naval-history.net is an error. Clio was at Trapani at the time and carried no such attack.

Best regards,

Platon
