Re: Operation Tripe
Hi Jordi, Despite the claims by the Swordfish pilots, there were no damages inflicted to vessels in Tripoli harbour. The "Tripe" force included: Aircraft carrier HMS Eagle Heavy cruiser HMS Berwick Light cruisers HMS Ajax, HMS Orion and HMAS Sydney [no battleships involved] I do not know t...

Re: HMS Sunfish / V-1
Hi Jordi, The aircraft pilot reported sighting the submarine at 0810B. The attack must have occurred in the minutes that followed. The initial position was given as 64°34' N, 01°16' W which was about 82 miles east of V.1's route. This meant that the submarine could have been enemy as bombing restric...

Re: Submarine Visits Lerwick 1942
Hi John, Unfortunately, the submarine reports reveal nothing on extra activities beyond the date and time of arrivals and departures at Lerwick. Sorry I cannot assist on that. Please note that the patrol numbers for FFS Minerve and Junon listed in my text are those from the time after they arrived i...

Re: Submarine Visits Lerwick 1942
Hi John, I am starting with FFS Minerve (I have anticipated your demand for 1943 and added it as it was short). Others will follow: FFS Minerve: Sailed from Dundee at 1300/10 February 1942 and arrived at Lerwick at 0915/14 February (delayed by bad weather). Sailed from Lerwick at 1700/18 February fo...

Re: Submarine Visits Lerwick 1941
Hi John, FFS Minerve arrived at Lerwick at 1400 hours on 4/9/1941 from a patrol off Sognefjord (her fifth under British control). She sailed from Lerwick at 1400/16/9/1941 for her sixth patrol (off Frojsjoen Fjord). On completion of this patrol, she proceeded directly to Dundee for repairs and arriv...

Re: Shetland Bus
Hi Platon, Many thanks for your interesting comments and observations. I had also thought that the most likely explanation for these unnamed arrivals were submarines already in port slipping out and back having been on exercise off Lerwick so it’s reassuring to have a second opinion. As you obvious...

Re: Shetland Bus
Hi John, The search in my database drew a blank for the period 14-16 March 1942. I do not claim it is perfect as corrections are being made on a daily basis! I checked British, French, Dutch, Norwegian and Soviet submarines, A few observations: Two submarines were at Lerwick at that time: HMS Tuna: ...

I may be able to help as far as submarines stopping at Lerwick if you can provide the dates for these 4 entries.

Dear Francesco,
Many thanks for the added details. There is a fragment of one of the torpedoes fired by Delfino at the Piraeus Naval Museum.
All the best,

Re: Action of Delfino vs Helli, 15th August 1940
Hello Fabrizio,
After firing a single torpedo at the light cruiser Helle, Delfino also fired a single torpedo at the passenger ships Elsi (1,433 GRT, 1891) and Esperos (1,461 GRT, 1918). but missed.
Best regards,
Platon

It has now been identified as the Italian submarine Giovanni Bausan which was converted as the oil depot G.R.S.251 and used as a target by the Allied Air For...

Re: HMS Hasty
Hi Jordi, I have not seen the HMS Hotspur report. It is not included in the Vigorous file but the HMS Hasty proceedings is there and it appears that she was sunk probably around 0600 hours. At 0530 hours, Lt. Cdr Austen made a signal of distress and shortly after HMS Hotspur arrived and managed to t...

Re: HMS Olympus
Dear Andrzej, It is possible that Jones was erroneously believed to have been aboard and later removed from the list of passengers. In any case he did not testify at the board of inquiry which seems to confirm that he was not present. Because of the confusing situation at Malta in those days when th...
