Re: CONVOY GREECE 2 OCTOBER 1944
Hello George and Jan-Olof, At the time of Curie 's attack (2104/2) the convoy consisted of Zar Ferdinand and Berta escorted by TA-18 and the patrol vessels GD-97 and GK-92 . Both transports were carrying a total of 1,177 troops. UJ-2102 and UJ-2144 had sailed from Saloniki at 1815/2 and were ordered...

Re: Confirmation that the Malta wreck is HMS Urge
The Malta Times has also published an article today: https://timesofmalta.com/articles/view/confirmed-wreck-off-malta-is-the-submarine-sunk-in-1942.870478 I have attached a 3D image of the wreck. The resolution is not great but I expect the University of Malta will release better ones in the near fu...

Hi Siri, Does this work better for you? https://www.tvm.com.mt/en/news/exclusive-new-footage-confirms-hms-urge-is-the-submarine-outside-grand-harbour/ If it does not work, it is possible because their web page is updated every day with other news. I will try to find out if I can get the original pag...

Re: Confirmation that the Malta wreck is HMS Urge
Hello Jan-Olof,
My work is not limited to the BETASOM submarines but encompass all Italian submarines of WW2. The publication is presently delayed by circumstances beyond my control. I am hopeful these will be soon solved. Thank you for your interest.
Best regards,
Platon

Confirmation that the Malta wreck is HMS Urge
Hello, Last week, divers led by Professor Timmy Gambin of the University of Malta carefully examined the wreck found in 2019 and identified it positively as HMS Urge. They took videos and photos and obtained details missed during the ROV inspection of 2019. A 3-D image will be produced in time. At t...

Re: HMS Thorbryn sunk 19.08.1941
Hello Jan-Olof, Many thanks for the suggestion. I have the book. It is usually very detailed but seems silent on the action of 19.08.1941 which is very frustrating! It is probable that the same units that attacked Tobruk on 17.08.1941 carried the attack two days later. Of course, we have no absolute...

Re: HMS Thorbryn sunk 19.08.1941
Dear Francesco,
Thank you for your reply. I have the book. One of the survivors, described the attack as made by four Junkers 88 (I think quite different from Ju 87). I was wondering if more details were known (unit and pilots involved as Fliegerführer Afrika is rather vague).
All the best,
Platon

HMS Thorbryn sunk 19.08.1941
Hello, I am interested in the story of the armed whaler HMS Thorbryn (ex Norwegian). The warsailors page is not very detailed. I have a few info collected from the C. in C. Med War Diaries and the casualties in ADM358 but little else. Some sources mention that she was sunk by fourteen Ju 87. A survi...

Re: Mysterious sinking on 10 June 1943 and submarine Brin
Hello Andrzej, Darius, Phil and Thorsten, Many thanks to you all for your input. Yes, it does seem that the HMS Wishart's story is probably bogus. She probably confused torpedo exploding at the end of their run for a victim. Perhaps if someone can unearth the G.T.X.2 convoy report, the story can be ...

Mysterious sinking on 10 June 1943 and submarine Brin
Hello, At 2210B/10 June 1943, HMS Wishart escorting convoy G.T.X.2 (a mixed convoy from Algiers to five different destination in Malta, Tunisia, Libya and Egypt) reported an unnamed ship torpedoed in 36°58' N, 05°51' E (NE of Djedjelli). The tug Empire Gnome was sent from Bougie to assist but appare...

Re: Operation Mincemeat
Hi Jordi and Brian, I second Brian's views on the naval history net site. Although it is a very interesting, it contains many mistakes. I am not trying to belittle those who created the site as it is inevitable that errors will occur considering the amount of data it has. It would be interesting to ...

Re: British submarine Seal 19.4.40
Hello Jan-Olof and friends, HMS Seal sighted what appeared to be a torpedo track at 1020 hours on 18th April 1940 (not the 19th) in 57°10' N, 00°20' E (source ADM199/1840). The "attack" is certainly bogus as no German U-boats (or S-boats) operated in this area at that time. All the best, P...

Re: Battle of Spartivento
Hi Jordi & al, Extracted from my book on Italian submarine operations (compiled from various sources): The force was divided in three groups: Force B: the battlecruiser Renown (flagship of Vice-Admiral Sir James F. Somerville, Force H), the aircraft carrier Ark Royal, the light cruisers Sheffiel...

Re: Operation Tripe
Hi Jordi and Thorsten, 1. HMS Barham was at Alexandria during the whole operation as she required repairs due to a serious feed tank leak. Sources: ADM199/387 and log ADM53/111552 (log). 2. The Naval-History-net is obviously in error. There was no Operation C, the operation's name was TRIPE and it w...
