Re: Armed escort trawlers

I always use THE HUNTERS/HUNTED as a first reference which would lead me to a more detailed book. If I find anything there I will revert!

GREEK SUBMARINE CONTACTS 1

Mr Platon you are right! Thank you very much for you comprehensive replies and excuse me for the wrong mentioned year dates due to the quick typing. The San Jiovanni port was a very low traffic port indeed! However, due to the first fruitless patrols the Greek/British Command had concluded that the ...

Re: Armed escort trawlers

Generaly: In the beggining, the mid Atlantic escorts were mainly ad-hoc V an W class WWI era destroyers with armed trawlers reinforcing the escort up to the edges of the Western Approaches. The escorts used to exchange in three succesive zones: Western Approaches/Iceland/Newfoundland. Expect formati...

COLOMBIE

Hi!
Has anyone ever heard about a Vichy troop transport called COLOMBIE? It is said that it used to operate in the Mediterranean in 1941-1942 but I can`t find anything relevant!
Thank you!

Re: unknown steamer

The letter on the funnel which declares the company is a P or an F as well By the way, take a look at this ship... https://www.wrecksite.eu/wreck.aspx?184088 Apart from the open post above the bridge (which could be added at a later time) they are almost the same. As you can see its previous name wa...

Re: unknown steamer

The rivet bolts are hardly visible which made me think that it was a 20s construction!

Re: TANKER ARSIA

Perfect! Impresive! I have just the "La difesa del traffico con l'Albania, la Grecia e l'Egeo" which I consider reliable to a great extent though incomplete... I just put the order for the Corinth Canal at last. I have been skirting around that book since I was studying the torpedoing of H...

Re: TANKER ARSIA

If there is a mistake of one day forward in the italian book, these ships could also be the aux.cruiser ZARA and the auxiliary KRETA (ex Ile de Beauté) from Patra to Dardanells. Rallis identified the escort as a destoyer, though the small AOB could be misleading. The Pontinia is an excellent candida...

MERKUR HORST PAUL

Well in the chroniks of the war in the Aegean there is a frequent reference about the ships MERKUR/HORST/PAUL but the evidence of their type are quite mixed. The facts are that the MERKUR/HORST where identical of 212brt while PAUL 200brt. The HORST/PAUL where sunk by torpedo boats on 8 October 1944 ...

Re: TANKER ARSIA

As I see this place is an endless source of information, so I grab the chance to ask if there is a way to establish the identity of a merchant ship which submarine NIREFS met in the KAFIREAS straight on 20th July 1942 (not on 19th when it met the hospital ship SICILIA). The submarine didn't attack b...

Re: TANKER ARSIA

Gentlemen, thank you very much for you replies. These days I try to reconstruct all the occasions that the greek submarines met their opponents during ww2. I have already found photos of ARSIA (LE SORCOFF), GIORGIO ORSINI (F-110) and POLA (not the MV) so, if anyone is intrested I can send them. Best...

TANKER ARSIA

Hello! I am looking information about an attack of the greek submarine PAPANIKOLIS at Lero on 10th Septmeber 1942. According to "La difesa del traffico con l'Albania, la Grecia e l'Egeo" I found out that this could be the tanker ARSIA. However it seems that the ARSIA had been sunk by HMS U...
