Re: unknown steamer
By downloading the picture and enlarging, the letters "AUSTR??" appear. One vessel that may fit could be AUSTRIAN built at Dumbarton in 1894.The apparent dimensions seem to fit. This vessel was believed to have been Norwegian owned at some time. A little more digging: Built as BHAMO at Wil...

Re: USN Armed Guard in WW1
Greetings Felix
From a casual scan I don't think that submarine activity was much within the scope of the Armed Guard in WW1.
Try the following site for some data.

Re: "Barry commodore"
At some stage the original convoy was split, with part of it going to the Bristol Channel, hence another Commodore was appointed for that portion, usually one of the ship's Master. Pilots for the Bristol Channel ports above Swansea and Port Talbot were based at Barry, and are to this day. Good hunti...

This could be a German Lloyd classification.
If so:
http://rules.dnvgl.com/docs/pdf/DNVGL/R ... Pt1Ch2.pdf
shows
M Modern Yacht Rigs
The qualifier M is a design additional class notation. (FiS survey requirements are not given)

Re: P.L.M. 23
From the following information it would possibly be trading under the German flag: PLM-23 was built in 1921 by Sir Raylton Dixon, Middlesbrough for the Soc. Nationale d'Affrètements, Le Havre. On August 5th, 1940, PLM-23 was seized by the Germans at Bordeaux and transfered to Unterweser Reederei A.G...

There is an amount written about salt and Ghandi, but the means of transport mentioned seems to be the railways, although salt lakes are mentioned. My old logbook has one voyage from Aden to Calcutta with salt. I recall we whi...
