Re: ASTI ex MELETIOS VENETSANOS

Hello Aris, The only thing I could find was that ASTI sailed from Genoa at 0500/6 July escorted by MAS 304 and proceeded at 6 knots to Savona where she arrived at 0830/6 July 1943. I doubt very much she moved to the Aegean as the invasion of Sicily which occurred 3 days later made the trip across th...

Re: Italian tug LITTORIO

Hi David,

The tug Littorio was badly damaged at Messina during an air raid on the night of 5/6 August 1943. She was abandoned as she could not sail when Allied forces entered the town ten days later.

Re: HMS Sunfish patrol Dec. 1940

Hi Jan-Olof,

It appears that the attack of 6.12.1940 was missed by Brian. I will let him know but he is presently busy with another project and I am not sure he will deal with it quickly. Many thanks.

All the best,

Re: Attack by HNMS O 24 on Oct. 29th, 1940

Hello Jan-Olof,

The target of O.24 was indeed Arcturus. One torpedo missed by only 5 metres astern (see KTB Admiral Norwegian West Coast, T1022/2753, NARA)

Re: HMS Sealion vs German convoy 6.8.1940

Hello Jan-Olof,

Sealion was rammed by the tug Steinbock. If you refer to the uboat.net page for the UJ 123 reference, it is wrong. I do not know who was the source of this error. I will inform Brian Corijn to correct it.

Re: Tilos attack

Hello Aris,

The culprits were MTB 309 and MTB 260. They claimed one vessel sunk (source: ADM199/1428).

Invasion of Norway and the Copenhagen leak

Has anyone identified who leaked the information about Weserübung to the American Embassy in Copenhagen? On about 6 April 1940, they were informed that the invasion of Norway was imminent and that a division transported in ten ships would land at Narvik while Sweden would be left alone. The signal w...

Re: Wreck of Italian submarine Giovanni Bausan

Hi Andrzej,

The wreck is about 10 miles north of Barletta. Where did you think it was?

For the submarine history see my page:

Commemoration for the 80th Anniversary of the loss of the submarine HMS Urge

Last week in Malta we were invited at a number of events for the commemoration of the loss of HMS Urge (27th April 1942). With dives occurring on 25th April to deploy a White Ensign on the wreck as well as a commemorative plaque. The movie of these dives shown at a screening at the University of Mal...

Re: Capture of Veslekari on a special mission

Many thanks for your reply. However, I am a bit confused by the translation. Any indication how Veslekari was captured? Where is Arcticsund? I assume she was captured by Fridtjof. Nansen which later destroyed the weather station at Myggbukta.

Re: Capture of Veslekari on a special mission

Hello David,

Many thanks for the additional links. I assume that those arrested on Veslekari were Quisling followers and that Veslekari sailed from the UK when she was intercepted.

Re: Capture of Veslekari on a special mission

Hello Andrzej, Many thanks for the link. I have since learned that Norwegian captain Axel Coll was arrested on Veslekari as he was working for the Abwehr and was bringing a couple of German wireless operators. Books by Nigel West and Sophie Jackson mention the case. However, I am curious to know fro...

Capture of Veslekari on a special mission

Hello, According to British sources (Naval Intelligence file ADM223/464, TNA), Veslekari (ex-Norwegian seal catcher) operated in German service and was sailed on a mission to supply clandestine weather stations in Greenland. The signals concerning her movements were deciphered by Bletchley Park and ...
