Re: Chr. Th. Boe

Hi Siri, Unfortunately i can't edit the ships attacked database, i can only edit the AW section as well as the new Italian submarine section. I have sent an e-mail to Gudmundur as Rainer is currently not working on uboat.net as i believe he could no longer combine it with his professional career. I ...

Chr. Th. Boe

Dear Siri, Regarding the sailing of the Chr. Th. Boe from Plymouth on 26 January 1945. The ship was not part of convoy ON 281. She was part of a US convoy ' LST return convoy No.3'. I have added the following content to uboat.net today. LST return convoy No.3 This convoy departed Cawsand Bay (Plymou...

Re: Battle of Spartivento

Hi Jordi, I checked some logbooks and was able to find out that HMS Diamond was not with Force D. There were only four destroyers present, Defender, Gallant, Greyhound and Hereward. These four destroyers are named two times, on the 26th and the 27th, in the logbook of HMS Ramillies. I've seen HMS Di...

Re: M/T Sagona

Hi Jordi,

I can't confirm that these destroyers were fuelling but all four you mentioned returned to Alexandria about one hour before the attack so it seems likely to me that they were refuelling at the time of the attack.

Re: Operation Style 1942

Hi Jordi, The ADM series is a huge collection of files at the National Archives at Kew in which the abbrevation ADM stands for Admiralty. This section is devided into a lot of sub sections, for instance ADM 53 holds ships logs, ADM 173 holds submarine logs, ADM 199 holds many war diaries of commands...

Re: Operation Mincemeat

Hi Jordi, I like the naval history website a lot, but i prefer to stick to my primary sources. As i said the report states that the whole force turned in the wind and this is backed up by the three logs i have available. If indeed a destroyer was detached with Ark Royal for flying operations (a comm...

Re: Operation Mincemeat

Hi Jordi, I checked file ADM 199/657 which hold a report on this operation. There is no mention in the report that 'Force H' was divided into two groups. Actually it mentions that the whole force turned into the wind (as for Ark Royal to fly off 10 Swordfish). I also checked the logbooks of HMS Ark ...

Re: British submarine Seal 19.4.40

Hi Jan Olof, I have checked the patrol report but there is no mention at all on this. In fact the last entry is for 17 April and says something like; proceeded to Rosyth as ordered. The last logbook of HMS Seal i have photographed is the one for March 1940. The logbooks of April and May 1940 most li...

Re: Battle of Spartivento

Hi Jordi, HMS Griffin was with 'Force A' so she was not present during the battle of Spartivento. She did not return to Alexandria with the fleet on conclusion of the operation though but was detached to Malta with defects which were to be made good at the Malta Dockyard. I believe she even remained...

Re: Battle of Spartivento

Hi Jordi, I checked file ADM 234/325 again and both destroyers are listed as being part of 'Force D'. I also noticed that both are mentioned in the log of HMS Ramillies (ADM 53/113048) on the pages for 26 and 27 November 1940. I don't recall having seen action reports of individual ships so what the...

Re: Erica

Hi Jordi, Don't know about the ships in the convoy. ADM 199/773 gives the following; Loss of HMS Erica. A convoy of five empty merchant ships was sailed from Benghazi at 0200 hours for Tobruk and Alexandria. At 1550 hours, in position 32°48'5 N, 21°06E, HMS Erica, who was investigating an A/S contac...

Hi Jordi, According to the logbook of HMS Dido for June 1942 (ADM 53/115794) she passed the boom at Alexandria around 2030 hours in company with Medway and Corinthia. They were escorted by Zulu, Sikh, Hero and Dulverton. At 0714 hours the next moring the convoy was joined by Exmoor, Aldenham, Croome...

Re: V and W class destroyers (Destroyer flotillas)

Hi Jordi,

These ships were all converted to AA escort vessels.
On completion of their conversion they were usually not assigned to destroyer flotilla's but to east coast commands (such as Rosyth, Nore, Humber, etc, etc.) for east coast escort duties.

Re: HMS Galatea

Hi Guys, According to the logbooks of HMS Naiad (ADM 53/114757) and HMS Euryalus (ADM 53/114250) it were indeed these two cruisers that were in company with HMS Galatea. The logbook of HMS Naiad mentions that the destroyer screen was detached half an hour before HMS Galatea was torpedoed. They were ...
