Joining from Halifax?

Notes:
Commodore Captain J. O. Dunn, R.N.R. was in Abraham Lincoln, Vice Commodore in Karamea.

When Ocean Escort joined on Jan. 27 in 44 27N 51 52W (details below) the convoy consisted of 69 ships, Abner Doubleday and George Wythe having straggled, and Edvard Kavanagh and Empire Manor having been involved in a collision. The 2 stragglers later rejoined.

During the voyayge, the escorting Assiniboine's doctor was put on board Pacific Exporter to attend to a maternity case!

Throughout Jan. 28 and 29 a moderate gale blew from the south, veering to the southwest, making it impossible to oil the escorts. Most of the escorts were occupied in rounding up stragglers.

Escorts:
HMCS Shediac, S.O. (other local escorts not known).
Group C 1: HMCS Assiniboine (S.O.), HMS Forester, HMCS St. Laurent, Fredericton and Halifax. HMS Celandine did not sail due to defect.
Also: HMS Postillion, Retalick and Northern Reward.

Northern Reward sailed in advance on Jan. 26-1944, escorting 3 St. John's ships to meet the convoy at WESTOMP.
HMCS Assiniboine, HMS Forester and HMCS Halifax left St. John's at 20:00Z in order to rendezvous with HX 276 at WESTOMP (S.O. in HMCS Shediac).
HMS Retalick and HMCS Fredericton caught up with the group during the night, having been subjected to a slight delay.
HMCS St. Laurent was delayed due to weather damage and sailed to overtake 24 hours later.
HMS Celandine had left at the appointed time but had to turn back with defective steering gear, so HMS Postillion sailed to take her place. This ship later reported a defective radar, but due to the weather conditions, no assistance could be rendered.
The convoy was taken over from W 8 at 16:00 on Jan. 27.
