Hi all!

Happy to be here again and watch yours posts!

German DD Z-28 was subjected to an air raid of Trondheim 24 July 1943 and slightly damaged by near-miss bombs. I wonder if there were any casualties on board.

Also, German BC Scharnhorst was slighly damaged during an air raid over Kiel by RAF bombers 12 March 1942 and suffered some casualties. Do you know how many?

Thank you very much
Jordi

Hello Jordi!

Concerning Z 28:
There is a three page action report from this bomb attack which states that Z 28 was very, very lucky to survive it.
Two bombs of about 500 kg exploded on the pier 15 m next to the ship and one pierced the pier and went into the mud next to the destroyer without exploding.
Z 28 was peppered by a hailstorm of stones, spliters and heavy metal fragments of materiel that was stored on that pier.
Another heavy bomb hit the tug Faettenfjord which was alongside Z 28. The tug sank and the resulting oil fire threatened the destroyer seriously. Ammo rooms had to be flooded, torpedos were covered in flames without exploding, ready-ammunition for the 2-cm AA exploded and some rooms ignited because of the pure heat from the oil fire.
So all in all it was a wonder that only 21 of her crew were wounded, no one heavily.

Concerning Scharnhorst:
- 3 dead
- 18 heavily wounded (of which two died two days later)
- 11 lightly wounded

Thank you Thorsten one more time!

I forgot to ask that Scharnhorst was also hit by Rawalpindi with one shell 23/11/39. Do you know if there were any casualties on board Scharnhorst?

Thank you one more time
