Post by AvM » Fri Jul 12, 2019 10:33 pm

Indian Salt Department operated many , mainly small sailing cutters, steam launches etc.

Are there are yny materials relating this service and its ships?

PS. Many of yours saw file Ghandi, when they went to sea to obtain salt.

Greetings

An interesting subject. I was based in India for several years. There is an amount written about salt and Ghandi, but the means of transport mentioned seems to be the railways, although salt lakes are mentioned. My old logbook has one voyage from Aden to Calcutta with salt. I recall we whitewashed the holds prior to loading.
Some of the Indian "country craft" were interesting, I cannot find much on them.
Keep digging.
