Memelland ex Etrema

Hello again,

there seems to be some ambiguities wrt this vessel.

Firstly according to this old post:

http://www.warsailors.com/forum/archive ... 3,327.html

the Memelland, 6236 grt, was damaged in a British sabotage action in Boulogne harbour on the 12th of April 1942.

This is corroborated by Chronik des Seekrieges 1939-1945 site although the date of the action is given as April 14th.

"14.4.42
Frankreich
Der dt. Versorgungstanker Memelland (6236 BRT) wird im Hafen von Boulogne durch eine Haftmine (Sabotage) schwer beschädigt."

https://www.wlb-stuttgart.de/seekrieg/42-04.htm

But we also have the excellent ASA – Alliierte U-Boot-Angriffe 1939-1945 in Europa where it is stated that the Memelland was damaged by a torpedo from the Soviet submarine M-172 on the 12th of April off Sturskaer (northern Norway), while escorted by V6113, V6114, V6115.

What gives?

Best regards,

Hi Jan-Olof,

I didn´t check the KTBs yet, but maybe there´s some confusion on the MEMELLANDs:

a) MEMELLAND ex VALDONA, Frachtdampfer, 3037 BRT,
b) MEMELLAND ex ETREMA, Tankmotorschiff, 6236 BRT,
c) MEMELLAND ex JULIA, Frachtdampfer, 1890 BRT.
d) MEMELLAND, ex KRETINGA, Dampfer, 542 BRT, + 15.08.1941
e) MEMELLAND, Motorschiff, 231 BRT

Regards

Darius

I can't find any attack on MEMELLAND in norwegian waters.

War diary 61. Vorpostenflottille only reports the escort of MEMELLAND and war diary Admiral norwegische Polarküste states that MEMELLAND reached Kirkesnes at 13:00.

Hello Darius and Thorsten,

many thanks for your replies. So it seems as if the Memelland, escorted by the 61. Vorpostenflottille, wasn't the ex Etrema but one of the other vessels listed by Darius, I wonder which one.

Best regards,

Jan-Olof
