HMS Olympus
Hi all,
How many people died on board submarine Olympus on 8 May 1942 off Malta?
Her crew was 60 men of whom just 3 survived. The others 36 were from submarines P-36, P-39, Pandora and light cruiser Penelope.
Thank you very much
Jordi

Re: HMS Olympus
Hi Jordi,
There were 98 on board, only 9 survived (a document shows a tenth survivor Leading Stoker Stanley JONES but this possibly is an error).
All the best,
Platon

Dear Platon,
These sites:
https://maltagc70.wordpress.com/hms-oly ... alty-list/
https://www.naval-history.net/xDKCas1942-05MAY.htm
does not list Leading Stoker Stanley JONES as KIA so perhaps this was not an error and indeed he was the 10th survivor?
All the best,
Andrzej

Re: HMS Olympus
Dear Andrzej,
It is possible that Jones was erroneously believed to have been aboard and later removed from the list of passengers. In any case he did not testify at the board of inquiry which seems to confirm that he was not present. Because of the confusing situation at Malta in those days when the Tenth Flotilla was evacuated (and subsequent loss of many documents on HMS Medway), an error is quite possible.
