CA Gorizia

Post by Jordi Comas » Thu Aug 01, 2019 4:25 pm

Hi all,

Italian heavy cruiser Gorizia suffered some casualties during an air ARF raid over Naples on 20/11/41.

Any more details like what sort of airplanes attacked the Italian base and number of them, number of casualties on board Gorizia or anything else?

Thank you very much
Jordi

Hello Jordi,

all I have from Admirality War Diary:
20.11.1941:
Night 19/20. [...] 17 Wellingtons operated {from Malta}. [...] 5 Mark II over Naples, 1925 to 0145 hours hits area Railway Station, two 4000 lb. bombs near marshalling yard and Gasworks.[...]

Hi Jordi and Darius,

The RAF raid on Naples of 20 November 1941 caused no casualties or damage to Regia Marina personnel and vessels. You are probably thinking of the raid on Messina on 21 November 1941 when two bombs fell on the quay next to Gorizia and caused about 200 small holes from fragments on her port side. There were two killed and nineteen wounded (one killed and eight or nine wounded belonged to the cruiser, the remainder from shore personnel). This did not prevent Gorizia from leaving on a mission the same evening.

Best regards,

Platon

They were Wellington bombers. I do not know the number. Sorry.
