Mostly ex Arabic , they recived new short names begining with MIN

For which purpose were these ships purchased and registered.

Some of them were built aT Damietta, Egypt during the war

In Fanagusta was situated in 1944-46 a camp
for Judish refugees, captured at sea or by landing at Palestina
before on 29 Nov 1947: United Nations approves partition of Palestine
From 12 Aug 1946 refugees landed at Palestina were deported to Cyprus by British authorities.
perhaps these ships were used for that purposes`?

I believe that these "MIN---" vessels were composite-hulled caiques [kaikien], some with auxiliary engines, ordered by the War Office from boatbuilders in Egypt in about 1943 for use, particularly by the Special Operations Executive, in the Balkans in the latter-stages of the war (and then post-war reconstruction). There are some War Office, SOE [HS] and Foreign Office files at TNA that may be relevant:

WO 204/8602 "Caiques: building, and employment policy" (1943) https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov. ... r/C4548705
WO 204/8953 "Provision of caiques and other small craft for relief work" (1944)
HS 5/609 "NOAH'S ARK; provision and maintenance of caiques" (1944) https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov. ... r/C3354134
FO 371/65699 "Disposal of caiques in the Dodecanese..." (1947) https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov. ... r/C2822985
and no doubt others on a more detailed search.

This is outside my field, and perhaps even the "MIN---" were something completely different.
In any case their registration records are in BT 110/1894-1895. The will probably reveal whether the whole batch were transferred to the Greek Government. Some may have gone to the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA) - I think that their archives catalogue is on-line.

There is an interesting article (in Greek) regarding the Min Caiques at https://www.taxydromos.gr/%ce%b1%cf%84% ... ktoplo-as/

Among others, it mentions that in 1944 the Greek Governement was given 100 (or 101) Min-Caiques that were placed under the management of E.D.MIN (initials for Greek equal of Min Management Co.)
By 1947 E.D.MIN was dissolved and 78 of the Mins were handed over to seafarers that had lost their sailing/motor ships during the war. Some (at least 6) had been already lost.

I have some ex-MIN vessels in my files and in a couple of weeks I will be able to cross-check with Creese's list and also look if MINEND is there.
