French SINAÏA

Post by Creese » Mon Apr 24, 2023 5:11 pm

Hello, I found on the web two versions of building dates for French SINAÏA passenger steamer by Barclay Curle: launched 19.08.1922, completed 11.1922 and launched 19.08.1921, completed 01.1922. Does anyone knows which is right ? Best regards, Kris.

Confirmed, by Ian Buxton, from Barclay Curle technical particulars book in Mitchell Library that launched 19/8/1922, without name. Lloyd's Register quarterly launch returns also have Q2/1922. Also trials were on 17/10/1922 (but, so soon after launch, suggests that she may not have been fully fitted out).

The circumstances were peculiar. The ship had been ordered by Compagnie Générale Transatlantique (CGT) as Yd 583 along with Yd 582 (completed 1921 as DE LA SALLE). Some time during construction, said to be "on the stocks" (before launch), the contract was transferred from French Line to Cie. Française de Navigation à Vapeur - Cyprien Fabre, in which CGT had become significant shareholders.

After her trials she was laid up by Barclay Curle in Gareloch until 1924. She finally sailed from the Clyde for Marseille on 20/8/2024
