off topic: barque FIETJOFF 1857+

The 300nrt FIETJOFF, listed in Lloyd's Register 1857-1859 was fomerly the British barque PASSENGER (listed up to 1856) built as a ship by John Brown & Sons at Montrose in 1840 for Robert Passenger, London (and later owned in Sunderland). in those 1857-1859 entries she is shown owned and captained by "C Ulitz" and registered at "Frdkshl", which I take to be Fredrikshald, now Halden

LR gives no clue as to what happened to her, and she does not seem to appear in the shipping newspapers (Lloyd's List, Shipping & Mercantle Gazette, Liverpool Shipping Gazette). Does anyone know of Norwegian sources that I could follow up?

Hey David,

it is still listed on LR on 1864 edition:

Hope that helps,

The reason you're not finding anything, David, is because the name is misspelled in the registry, it's supposed to be "Fridtjof" or "Fridthjof".

It was re-rigged as brig "Olaf" and stranded 1897 at Goatness Point, 3 miles east for Dunbar enroute Fredrikshald - Boness with mine props. Got off with assistance from steam tug "Earl of Windsor" and was taken to Boness, where she was condemned and sold as wreck.

As to Norwegian sources, I have tried to clean up the sailship registry of Petter Malmstein, which contains about 10,000 Norwegian sailing ships - Original source here - https://kulturnav.org/978f91c5-f186-453 ... c1a663c9e6

This is my dashboard - https://lookerstudio.google.com/reporti ... 1fba9a8582

But it's still a work in progress and most of it is still in Norwegian. This would probably not have helped you this time, because in Norwegian papers, she's listed as being built in 1843, not 1840 - and there is no reference to the "Passenger" name.

Probably just best to send me a message if it concerns a Norwegian ship.

Thanks you both, and especially to erlbon for the detailed info and pointing me to the KulturArt site.
It seems as if I will be able to use that without too much diffuculty (with Mr Google at my side) And I look forward to approach this also through your "dashboard" (message sent on that system)

Meanwhile, I have updated the Scottish Built page: https://www.clydeships.co.uk/view.php?ref=64515
