HMS Sealion vs German convoy 6.8.1940

Post by jan-olof » Sun Sep 04, 2022 1:39 pm

Hello,

On the 6th of August 1940 HMS Sealion fired several torpedoes against a southbound convoy, allegedly consisting of four merchants and one escort vessel. The convoy which consisted of the merchants Cläre Hugo Stinnes, Marie Leonhardt plus the tug Steinbock was escorted by UJ 123 and M 1808, later joined by M 1807. The convoy was bound for Kristiansand.

My question concerns the damage sustained by Sealion due to being rammed by one of the vessels of the convoy. Most sources credit UJ 123 with the ramming but German sources credit the tug Steinbock. What gives?

Best regards,

Hello Jan-Olof,

Sealion was rammed by the tug Steinbock. If you refer to the uboat.net page for the UJ 123 reference, it is wrong. I do not know who was the source of this error. I will inform Brian Corijn to correct it.

Best regards,

Hello Platon,

many thanks for clearing this up. I did indeed check on u-boat.net but also on the Chronik des Seekrieges 1939-1945 site and they were both in agreement.

Best regards,

Many thanks!

I gave a notice to Thomas Weis and it will soon be corrected in HMA-ASA and the Chronik.
