U-Jäger loss confusion

Post by jan-olof » Sun May 16, 2021 1:47 pm

In one of my older sources it is claimed that on October 7th, 1944 the German vessel UJ 2102 was sunk by British destroyers off Kassandra Huk. This is clearly wrong as can be seen in a comment from Platon here:

http://warsailors.com/forum/archive/for ... #msg-59908

If UJ 2102 was lost on the 13th then which vessel was sunk by British destroyers on the 7th apart from TA 37? According to, e.g.

https://www.wlb-stuttgart.de/seekrieg/44-10.htm

it was UJ 2101 / Birgitta
I wonder if this is correct as I have seen other sources claiming that the vessel lost on this occasion was in fact UJ 2144. But if that is correct then what happened to UJ 2101?

As you can see there's plenty of confusion here and it would be nice if it could be untangled.

In my database I have:

UJ-2102 surviving the engagement and reaching the nearby Volos harbor where it was bombed.

UJ-2144 sunk near Poseidi beach (South of Salonika) on 6 Ocrober at 2200 by two destroyers probably the usual suspects.

The reference to UJ-2101/Strymon is obviously a typo, as it had already been sunk since June 1944.

Cassandra like Poseidi lays at the middle of the western coast of the westmost of the three peninsulas while entering Salonika bay.

Hello George and Thorsten,

many thanks for your replies. I don't understand how I managed to miss the discussion on https://www.forum-marinearchiv.de/ that was a bit sloppy on my part :)

So, if I understand things correctly we have:

June 1st, 1944
UJ 2101 / Strymon sunk in an air raid on Iraklion

October 6-7, 1944
TA 37 sunk by British destroyers HMS Termagent and HMS Tuscan off Cassandreia.
UJ 2144 and GK 62 sunk by the same destroyers but in different engagements.

October 13th, 1944
UJ 2102 / Birgitta sunk during an air raid on Volos, she was not involved in the fighting on the 7th.

Best regards,

Jan-Olof
