What happened to Vorpostenboot V 6517

Post by jan-olof » Tue May 11, 2021 2:04 pm

Hello again,

here's another mystery. According to many sources, the sinking of this vessel is attributed to the Soviet submarine V 2 on the 12th of October 1944, i.e.

12.10.44
D APP V 6517 43 208 + R/SS V 2 v. Nordkyn T

HMA (https://historisches-marinearchiv.de/pr ... eibung.php) on the other hand does not agree and HMA is usually correct so what gives, what really happened to this vessel, did she perhaps survive the war?

Best regards,

That is possible.

War diary 65. Vorpostenflottille ends 31.01.1945, and there V 6517 is still mentioned.

Hi,
V-6517 had an engine breakdown 9.10.1944 off Hammerfest, and was towed into hammerfest by V-6507 11.10.1944.
Operational again 26.10.44. Obviously not sunk 12.10.1944.
She changed number to V-6531 around 2.1945, and was operational in Horten in May 1945 as a part of HS-Fl Oslo (not changed number).

Best regards,
Erling

Hello Thorsten and Erling,

many thanks for your detailed answers. It seems as if this vessel also survived the war then.

Only attack conducted by V-2 was one against UJ.1220
