Kurt,

Snabzhenets Vtoroi (Снабженец Второй) was a fishing ship in the service of Krabomorzverotrest, the Soviet crab fishing fleet. It was not part of the Soviet Far East Sea Shipping Company. As such, I doubt it was on point-to-point transit when it ran aground in heavy fog near the Stone of Danger in La Perouse Strait. Most likely it has staged from Vladivostok, had spent time fishing in the northern Pacific, and was returning to Vladivostok.

I have the date of the incident as 26 June 1941, not 5 July.

The ship, incidentally, was caught up in rising Soviet-Japanese tensions. According to K.E Cherevko (Серп и молот против самурайского меча), on June 28 the Soviets had asked the Japanese to rescue the sailors of the stranded ship. They did so, and forwarded them to another Soviet ship -- but then they arrested the crews of both ships for violating Japanese waters and intruding on areas of sensitive military operations. The Soviets had also been arresting Japanese fishermen for intruding in these waters and in the end the arrested sailor were exchanged and repatriated.

Thanks.

There are multiple transliteration protocols and they have evolved over time. I have stayed with the US Library of Congress transliteration protocol (ALA-LC). This produces Snabzhenets Vtoroi as the transliteration. The GOST/UN protocol and the BGN/PCGN protocol produce the results you present. YMMV.
