On October 8, 1943, British forces landed in the Azores, including the Horta (Faial island) roadstead to be used as a naval base Four RN trawlers were lent to the Portuguese Navy just then, to reinforce their patrol forces of the archipelago. says the loan was for "territorial waters patrol". From the Admiralty War Diary for 12 June, 1944, I gather that RN crews were sent to Horta to recover two trawlers, namely VASCAMA and CAPE PORTLAND, and sail them back to Liverpool.

A little bit off topic, but maybe there are any hints in this document:

MT 15/1471 - `Vascama' O.N.169200, ex-Admiralty steam trawler: re-fitting for fishing service; life-saving appliance arrangements: ... r/C3246282
