They were usually referred by the name of the leading escort (example: Tarigo convoy) or one of the freighters and (rarely) by a code name (example: "Beta" convoy for the Duisburg convoy of November 1941 or "Aprilia" ...

Hello Urs,

The 30 July attack was made up by eight Beaufighters of 39 Squadron (RAF), four carrying torpedoes and four acting as anti-flak (the Italians mentioned seven aircraft). The attack on the previous day was also made by Beaufighters but apparently from another squadron.
