Wooden coaster BUSANT

Does anyone have info on the 83-foot Norwegian wooden coaster BUSANT - builder, owners, service area etc. At some point she was owned by Ingvar Drågen: https://www.pidragen.com/Sider%20linket%20til%20frontsiden/Mine%20Baatbilder/B/Busant.html She was in Lerwick in July 1989 https://www.shipspotting....

Re: ASTI ex MELETIOS VENETSANOS

Although I can add nothing to the original question about this vessels war history and loss, I can clarify some parts of her earlier history. James Pollock, Sons & Co Ltd were London-based consulting engineers and naval architects (having their own shipyard at Faversham only came later, towards ...

Italian tug LITTORIO

On the Naples-based civil port tug LITTORIO (208grt, built 1927 Danzig), I have:
10/5/1940 requisitioned by the Italian Navy, designated F 30
15/8/1943 lost by enemy action at Messina

Anyone know what kind of "enemy action"?

Re: River gunboat HMS Firefly final fate in Mesopotamia

I cannot throw any light on the rather specific claim by Dittmer/Colledge (except to note that as far back as 1969, Colledge had "Sunk 6.24 by insurgents in the Euphrates" in Ships of the Royal Navy, Vol 1 . It does seem likely that this is a corrupted reference to the 1920 incident. The W...

Re: St. Essylt 1940

All was on schedule for the intended mid-1940 completion/delivery when WW2 broke out. The Doxford-type engine was made by Richardsons Westgarth, but the crankshaft was subcontracted to SA John Cockerill, Seraing, Bekgium. That was lost on the German occupation of Belgium; and then there were difficu...

Re: Details of the Norwegian motor vessel Silva?

I think that Sid has put his finger on it - and agree that the painting is probably the same one as in the National archives note.

Re: Details of the Norwegian motor vessel Silva?

This seems like the Norwegian whaler SILVA, built 1910 Leith 127grt 47nrt, 94.8 x 19.1 x 11.0 ft and owned at the time by Bergen owners (B 21 B looks like a Bergen fishing boat number). More details: http://www.clydeships.co.uk/view.php?ref=51384 Here's a painting of her made in the 1950s by Ted Dro...

Re: Role of the Danish vessel ISLANDS FALK in the Faroe Islands, 1939-40?

Definitely a naval vessel (Krigsskib), an armed fishery protection vessel (Inspektionsskip), per Danish Shipregisters. https://da-m-wikipedia-org.translate.goog/wiki/Inspektionsskibet_Islands_Falk?_x_tr_sl=da&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=en&_x_tr_pto=sc Nice photo, probably taken in Amsterdam (D...

C 2, Wilhelmshaven

Can anyone identify this German vessel, apparently taken at Wilhelmshaven (published Photo Droppel) and named "C 2" (undated)? Probably an ex-tug (note towing hook), but with too much added aft for that role - and so apparently absent from Gröner Vol.6. Perhaps for buoy maintenance or a di...

Re: Capture of Veslekari on a special mission

The Norwegian Wikipedia page https://no.wikipedia.org/wiki/MS_%C2%ABVeslekari%C2%BB_(1918) also omits any mention of German service or capture (and, at least in Mr Google's translation, seems rather confusing about these years). However, it may be that two of the sources cited have something fuller:...

GRAAF VISART

In May 1850 the Zeebrugge tugs GRAAF VISART and BARON DE MAERE were requisitioned for the Belgian Corps de Marine , which assembled at Dartmouth in June and sailed to Lorient, arriving on the 17th. The two tugs were taken by German forces in the following week - their German service is summarised in...
