P.S. please check the uboat.net site from time to time as new sections will be added. A list of most successful Italian submarine commanders has just been added. A list of most successful submarines will follow soon and hopefully a chronology and an overview including statistics.

Re: Italian Human Torpedo attack on Alexandria Dec 1941
Hello Francesco, Thank you fo your kind comments. My text is addressed principally to English readers as the subject of Italian submarine operations is little known outside Italy. I am not sure I can contribute much to Italian readers but I will consider your offer to publish another article for AID...

Re: Italian Human Torpedo attack on Alexandria Dec 1941
Hello Jan-Olof, Many thanks for your good wishes which I reciprocate. Hopefully the year 2022 will see the end of this pandemic! I do not think my book on Italian submarines will ever be printed and I have decided that publishing on the web will be more suitable as it allows for corrections and addi...

Re: Italian Human Torpedo attack on Alexandria Dec 1941
Hi Darius,
Thank you for your kind words. I may perhaps have another article. I suspect that the Italian submarine Section will keep me busy as updates and corrections are inevitable.
All the best for the New Year,
Platon

Italian Human Torpedo attack on Alexandria Dec 1941
To mark the 80th Anniversary of this famous attack, the magazine Rivista Marittima is publishing an article of which I am co-author with Commander Rizza of the Italian Navy (former Head of the Italian Naval Archives Section). It is titled "Storia di una Baleniera" (story of a whaling ship)...

Re: Swedish RUDOLF, lost December 1939
Hi David, There is no doubt that U-56 sank the Swedish Rudolf . The KTB of the U-boat (T1022/2882, NARA) makes it perfectly clear. One G7e torpedo was fired at 2325/2 December and hit under the funnel after 87 seconds. A second G7e torpedo was fired at 0015/3 December and hit after 52 seconds, 30 me...

Re: Battle of Spartivento
Very difficult to assess which destroyer was part of which group at a given time. Reports are contradictory. Perhaps we will never know for sure.

Hi Jordi, 1) according to my information Vidette , Velox and Wrestler were ordered to Gibraltar after being relieved from convoy escort duty. 2) Carabiniere did not take part in the battle. She was in Messina repairing defects to her boiler tubes and only sailed to Naples on 2 December. Trento saile...

Re: Battle of Spartivento
Hi Jordi, 1) Vidette was ordered back to Gibraltar shortly after crossing the Strait with the convoy. AFAIK she did not take part in the battle. 2) the destroyer Corazziere sailed from Messina at 1130/26 with Lanciere and Ascari screening the heavy cruisers Trieste and Bolzano . During the battle, L...
