Re: Details of attack by KG26 on SS Henry Bacon

After reviewing the account in Schmidt's history of KG26, and factoring in other generally authoritative sources, I believe the following aircraft took part... 10 Ju 188A-3 aircraft from III./KG26 (Staffel 8./KG26) 9 Ju 88A-17 aircraft from II./KG26 Any corrections or augmentations greatly appreciat...

Re: Details of attack by KG26 on SS Henry Bacon

Thanks, Darius. We now have three different numbers of aircraft attacking SS Henry Bacon. Sources taking the perspective of US forces (e.g., Browning), probably all referencing the original estimates of ship personnel as initially reported by Morison, say 23 aircraft (both Ju 88 and Ju 188) were inv...

Details of attack by KG26 on SS Henry Bacon

Hi everyone, First, my best wishes for a Happy New Year to each of you -- and especially our webmistress Siri! Second, I'm looking for details on the Luftwaffe aircraft involved in the attack on SS Henry Bacon on 23 February 1945 in the Barents Sea. I believe torpedo aircraft (Ju 88 and/or Ju 188) f...

Re: Naval records research in Spain

Thanks, Felix. Let me explain the nature of my interest. It may help... The tugboat Mascot left Baltimore in November 1895 on a presumed voyage to the island of Trinidad. It was never heard from again. There was speculation at the time that the tugboat was on a "filibustering" mission to C...

Re: Naval records research in Spain

Hello Felix, and Happy New Year! Thanks very much for your information. The article by Castañón should be extremely helpful. This is the first time I've received material from the perspective of the Spanish Navy on the interceptions of boats from the US bringing weapons and personnel into Cuba. I've...

Re: SOVETSKAYA NEFT

Happy to help. And, for the record, I concur that Jordan's book is a masterpiece. One challenge Jordan faced is that the Soviet authorities intentionally hid losses in their merchant fleet from Western sources. They did not want the US to know how vulnerable they were, at least until they were able ...

Re: Soviet motor vessel Voroshilov torpedoed on 29 March 1942 - are further details known?

Maurice,

I tried to track the movements of all Russian ships (over 900GRT) from 1917 forward, especially their status during the turmoil of the 1917-1922 period. I don't have them tracked year by year before 1917 however.

Re: Naval records research in Spain

Thanks, Maurice and Jordi I've thoroughly researched anything available on the web already. (This has been a topic of inquiry for me for at least five years.) The incident in question for me does not involve the (famous) interception described above. I'm looking specifically for help in locating the...

Naval records research in Spain

Hi everyone, Does anyone know a researcher familiar with researching naval archives in Spain? I need to try to locate the deck logs, or similar records, for the Spanish navy cruiser Conde del Venadito from the period November 1895 to January 1896. I am investigating a specific incident in which is m...

Re: Soviet motor vessel Voroshilov torpedoed on 29 March 1942 - are further details known?

Hi Siri,

Thanks for the note. Not sure what happened in the earlier communication. I'd be happy to post some of the databases I created as well as scans I have of some (non-copyrighted) material such as the VMF casualty reports. Let's figure out how to do this.

Re: Soviet motor vessel Voroshilov torpedoed on 29 March 1942 - are further details known?

Looks like the image is visible now. I have assembled the individual scans into PDF files by theater (Black Sea, Northern, Baltic), separated into ships lost and ships damaged for each. If people want copies of the files (they are pretty big -- 700 pages total) send me a PM with your email address a...

I have scans of the individual pages of this report -- there are hundreds. (It is not a single PDF). Here is the scan for the incident in question:

Sorry -- I've tried pasting the actual image but I can't seem to figure out how to get that to work.

Re: russian SNABJENEC VTOROI

Thanks. There are multiple transliteration protocols and they have evolved over time. I have stayed with the US Library of Congress transliteration protocol (ALA-LC). This produces Snabzhenets Vtoroi as the transliteration. The GOST/UN protocol and the BGN/PCGN protocol produce the results you prese...
