Re: Rust on Lifeboat Davits

hi, Marty, The life rafts on board had, according to many accounts, become "welded" to the hull via rust, paint, etc. I did experience similar conditions myself on a small Greek ferryboat when travelling with a group through Crete. My objective is to understand the relative importance of t...

Re: Rust on Lifeboat Davits

hi, For a troopship operating in WWII, how big of a deal would it be to have rust on the chains, blocks, and davits used for lowering lifeboats? IMO a big deal, called irresponsibility Could the rust effectively lock the system so that the lifeboat could not be lowered? yes, I think so Are there mec...

hi,

Re: Operation Lever

hi, Jordi, to add to the confusion, u-boat.net mentions nine DDs only [quote] F.A.A. attack on the Dunkerque, 6 July 1940. Meanwhile ‘Force H’ sailed from Gibraltar at 2000/5. They first proceeded westwards but turned to the east at 2200 hours and proceeded at 22 knots towards Oran. ’Force H’ was no...

Re: Operation Style 1942

hi,

according to the Chronik des Seekriegs, there was a second sortie of EAGLE and escorts on June, 9, to fly off Spitfires to Malta, the first (June, 3) w/o Partridge, the second (June, 9) with Partridge

Was that sortie still part of STYLE or did it have an own code name ?

Re: Providentia/Fortunato Pio/San Romolo

hi, Providentia (139 GRT/?) was bombed and sunk by German Ju-87 planes 14/7/40 at 49-55N 09-12W. No survivors. I voice my doubts whether a ship in the open sea south of Ireland and approximately 250 nm distant from the next German (near Brest) airfield was sunk by Ju 87 ... possibly Ju 88 ? greeting...

hi, British destroyer Penylan was torpedoed and sunk by S.115 in the English Channel 3/12/42 while escorting convoy PW-257. The convoy was composed by 7 merchants escorted by 2 escort destroyers, 5 trawlers and 3 ML motor launches. I'm trying to identify those ships: Merchants: Isac (2385 GRT/26), G...
